Sciennes celebrates Bike Week with Ride to School Days on 19th May and 16th June

To celebrate Bike Week 2017 we are organising two Ride to School Days on Friday 19th May and Friday 16th June.

The route is the same as usual. We leave from King's Buildings at 8.15 and cycle along Mayfield Road, Causewayside and turn left into Sciennes House Place. Qualified ride leaders accompany the ride. You are welcome to join us from side streets along the way.

Let's aim for a great turnout! Our closed road at Sciennes should make it much easier to cycle along Sciennes Road and straight into the playground.

Scooter Bikes Available

We have a selection of small scooter bikes which are ideal for learning to ride a bike. These are suitable for P1, P2 and pre-school children and are absolutely free. They will be available to collect in the playground at 'home' time tomorrow.

SKELF Bike Park Open Day!

As part of the annual Edinburgh Festival of Cycling the SKELF Bike Park is having their annual Open Day!

Come along, say hello, find out about this great project, and most importantly have fun!
All welcome!

What's Happening:

• Test your skills on our awesome timber pump track (all bikes/helmets etc laid on)!
• Have a bite to eat at the BBQ (donations welcome)
• Find out about the plans for the Bike Park
• Try your luck on the 'Wheel of Fortune' (prizes...)
• Learn bushcraft skills
• Learn about the site with our heritage & geology tours
• Bag yourself a signed copies of Chris Hoy's latest book and other bike goodies at the charity auction.
• Treat your ears to live music from around the world

Toby Runner Up in Edinburgh 20mph Mascot Competition

When Toby McIntosh came second in City of Edinburgh's 20mph mascot competition, he won a smoothie bike session for his P7 class. Niall brought the bike, juice and fruit to school and they had great fun making delicious smoothies.

The class chose Sophie E's carton design as their favourite and she won a buff. Well done Sophie!

Sciennes P5B Cycle Outing to Bingham

Great time had by all on Ms Owen's Golden Time cycling treat despite cold and damp weather. total distance travelled - 6.4 miles and the second half was mostly uphill. Some great cyclists in P5B. Looking forward to seeing them tackling and completing Bikeability 2 in August/September. Thank you to all helpers.

Sciennes Walk to School Week (16-20 May)

SCIENNES encourages pupils and parents to stride out this Walk to School Week

Sciennes is encouraging families to leave the car at home and give walking a go this Walk to School Week (16-20 May).  Thousands of pupils in every part of Scotland will be taking part, getting active and transforming their journey to school.

Walking to school is free, easy and accessible way for children to fit some vital physical activity into their day to ensure they remain fit and healthy. It also provides an opportunity for children to learn vital road safety skills and arrive at school feeling alert and ready to learn. Plus, when children walk to school there are fewer cars on the roads, reducing air pollution and congestion and making roads safer for everyone.

Living Streets Scotland runs the Walk to School campaign, and the charity says parents and carers find the journey to school less stressful and that they - and their children - feel healthier and happier.

Over the past decades, the number of children who walk to school in Scotland has been falling. However, when schools participate in successful walk to school schemes like Living Streets’ WoW Scotland (Walk once a Week), they see over 75 per cent of pupils regularly travelling to school by foot, scooter, cycle or park and stride.

Chris Thompson, Schools and Projects Coordinator, Living Streets Scotland said:

“This May, we want to get the whole of Scotland involved. We’re urging families up and down the country to give walking a go during Walk to School Week.

“You’ll be amazed at what a difference a short blast of fresh air can do for you. It’s free, green and easy, and above all it works. We need to encourage children to get walking now and set in place healthy habits for the future.”
